1964 Fender Princeton Amp – BK Butler Tube Driver Demo

Add &fmt=18 to the end of the web address for high quality playback! Another way to approach low volume overdrive. Instead of using an attenuator and getting OD from the power section of the Princeton, this time it's the Tube Driver's OD in the preamp section (5751 NOS USA Tube used). The Princeton's volume is only at 2, so all that sag is from the Tube Driver. If you want to hear single note runs from an amp with more headroom, check out Eric Johnson 48 seconds into this vid: uk.youtube.com

    You’re kidding! That’s a steal! Gotta get that…

  • ilovemyfender1 says:

Yet another question: Does the pedal version sound very different?

  • Jahnli says:

Hmm never tried the pedal version. I’m guessing the bigger sound change is for tube swapping, I put an RCA 5751 in there instead of the stock russian 12AX7.

  • ilovemyfender1 says:

Makes sense. If or (when) I get my tube driver, I’ll probably swap tubes like you did. I just want that sound REALLY badly. :)

  • Maxpound says:

    what song was that?

  • Jahnli says:

Just my own 4-chord progression idea, heh.

I have the pedal version of this an it sounds amazing. And Jahnli is right,
you have to put diff tubes. Mine came with the 12ax7 and I put a fender 12at7 in it and it sounds really different. More bass response and an earlier breakup than other tubes. I tried an old fender 7025 / at7 / ay7 / ax7 / au7 / and the at7 fender from china sounds the best. its all just messin with tone

sounds like something i have heard before…maybe radiohead…cant put my finger on it

  • Fluffypopcicle says:

how do i get my hands on one of these things? im dying to get one.

  • Jahnli says:

found mine on craigslist, ebay should have some pop up too.

  • MrGodam29 says:

    thanx 4 the SOUNDS man!!!

  • RolandBurt says:

stunning. Would you say the pedal version of this that BK is making now is as good as this rack unit?

  • Jahnli says:

If you get the version with the bias control, it should get close, although the rack does have a few more differences. The tube used makes more of a difference than anything else as far as tone is concerned.

take care and thanks for your demos and playing .. ;-)

  • KINGSLIDEGUITAR says:

the NV has more head room and sounds better than the reverb model,,

  • johnreid1234 says:

    what song are you playing

  • Jahnli says:

Ah, just sliding up and down the neck in an Emajor chord shape.

  • Aaronpodgorski says:

Everytime I watch this vid it makes me reevaluate my whole rig. This is the best tone i have ever heard. Anybody wanna buy Mesa Lonestar special?

  • baghaturyan says:

@RolandBurt Did you get the bias-control version of this pedal? I’m interested myself. What does that control do? Thanks.

  • baghaturyan says:

@Jahnli Why do you recommend the bias-control unit? What does the bias-control feature enable the Tube Drive to do? Thanks!

  • Jahnli says:

@baghaturyan the bias adjustment acts like something that affects the type of tube you use – from a weak 12AU7 type that has sweet cleans but not much overdrive power, to a strong 12AT7 that brings? beef and power to the overdrive but a bit muddy in the cleans. If you’re looking for something that will affect the duration and power of your overdrive, the bias control can contribute to it.
