Traynor YCV40WR guitar amplifier demo

This amp gets some great sounds using a strat or a 335 straight into amp with no pedals. The volume in the room was very loud though. The brightness switch is always ON for that glassy fender sound. The Celestion Vintage 30 speaker sounds noticeably smoother after it has had some time to break-in. I sped up the process by connecting the speaker directly to a 400w mono QSC power amp and played the local R&B/Rap radio station through it for about 8 hours at a safe volume. When I got home from work and reconnected the speaker, it sounded fantastic. The overdrive settings starting at 1:30 were: (Channel 1) Gain: 8 Volume: 2 Treble, Bass, Middle all three set to: 5 Boost: OFF Presence: 6 Reverb: 5 Stock tubes were replaced with 'early breakup' set (see below) of JJ Electronic Eurotubes: www.eurotubes.com Traynor YCV40 - High gain option. A pair of the JJ 6l6gc's along with three hand picked high gain ecc83s's with one of them being balanced for the phase inverter in V3. For you players who need a little more edge! These are fixed bias amps so please use the comments box before checking out to let me know if your after max headroom, middle of the road, or an earlier breakup from the clean channel so I can pick the proper grade for the power tubes. The 335 humbuckers were a dimarzio Air Norton in the bridge and a Gibson '57 Classic in the neck. The strat was a mahogany Fender American Select Stratocaster HSS with a Diamondback humbucker and two Tex-Mex single-coils.

This amp seems to have a lot of tonal options from a really nice clean to crunch and OD – nice demo!

I just bought this amp, nice demo. The best I have seen so far.

Hi. Very nice demo and great playing.

I too, own the same amp. Do you ever use the boost switch? I like the sound when it’s on for solos, however the increase in gain is so subsantial that it puts the volume of my solos way over the top when I engage this feature.

    Any thoughts?

  • oiadscient says:

compensate for it. match the volumes as best you can. Remember the more gain the higher the volume, so lower the volume knob a little.

this amp can do so much!
I play a totally different kind of music but if any one is interested to see what this amp would sound like with OD and at volume nearly topped then check out the video on my page

I have the black ycv40 myself. Different speaker, overdriven it sounds a little bit crunchier and less smooth than the wine red, but still very nice.

I like to think of the boost circuit as the equivalent of throwing a tube screamer with the level dimed in front of the amp to push the pre-amp a little harder, like SRV used to do.

Damn man, you really sold me on getting one of these now. I love my Vox AC30CC for all its heaviness and occasional tonal brattiness, but I may have to look into one of these…

  • DamnedWild says:

Can you tell me which settings you used?

  • A7XSYN15 says:

  • callthemall says:

  • clayton5150 says:

you can really inhance the allready great tone with a good set of preamp tubes!

  • chichymama says:

I have one of these amps.. Nice tones eh? I get raves about it…. I put it through a closed back 2/12 and an eq all flat but the level railed right out. This thing lights up when you overdrive the front end of the amp this way. Try it you’ll be very impressed…

When your at a 1:30 min are you playing the es-335 or a strat, sounds like something with a humbucker. Good tone.

  • shovelheadl979 says:

Thanks. It was the 335 on the bridge pickup, a Dimarzio Air Norton.

i just got a ycv40wr last week, i like the clean channel but the overdrive channel is irratating me, seems real raspy, im hopin its just the new speaker breakin in? I had a hot rod that i had to use a pedal to get a decent overdrive and i was hopin i didnt have to with the traynor.
